Xiaomeng DuAbout

I am a multidisciplinary video artist and communicator who interested in making videos that emphasize on relationships, sensory and visualization in terms of transformation between abstraction and figuration. My work, which spans videos, installations, paintings, and photography, emphasizes relationships, sensory experiences, and visualization. In the art gallery context, where aesthetics can often eclipse substance, I seek to elevate the perceptual power of abstract art, challenging viewers to bridge the perceived divide with their intuition.

My work is rooted in accessible abstract video art, which delves into questions surrounding memory, perception, and the construction of imagery. I aim to connect with viewers through abstract storytelling and everyday life scenes, encouraging them to delve into their subconscious and memories in order to engage with my visual narratives.

  • The ‘Untitled’ II tells a story of a viewer and the museum. He was attracted by a piece of video art and got confused. After reading the introduction and the background story, he still could not understand it. So, he decided to explore it by himself. Eye Stabber is a stop motion animation made by Tala Madani. I am inspired by the idea of using real scene as background to set the contrast with the cartoon character, and her slapstick humor’s style.

The Knot is a video installation that explores the various forms of memory through material experimentation. Objects are seen as containers of memories, and memories define both the present and our future. Through the process of revisiting memories using everyday objects and the act of creation, new memories are simultaneously forged. I aim to embody the familial bond and love through the materials themselves and the process of making. This work involves the rebuilding of objects belonging to my deceased loved ones, using materials such as memories, audios, and photographs to construct a virtual narrative setting. The storyline, guided by the stories of my greatgrandmother and my childhood memories, reflects the process of transitioning from recalling the past to create new memories.
